PAVEMENTS AND ROADS SET FOR RESTRUCTURING

It has been a year in the waiting but work is finally about to start on modernising the pedestrian access around the town hall.

The ramped access into and out of the building will be improved at the rear entrance door, with the pavement being levelled and additional bicycle parking being provided to try to prevent cyclists from chaining their bikes to the lampposts which then blocks the access for wheelchair users.

Mercadona have donated a piece of their land, where part of a perimeter wall will now be removed to allow for a pavement to be created following a natural route from the roundabout towards the town hall.

The work has taken so long to start as the plans and financial structure had to be completed before hand.

Meanwhile, final draft plans have now been completed for the traffic access and egress at the La Zenia roundabout, which will be submitted to the ministry in Alicante.

Footpaths will also be created on parts of this structure, as well as making two of the access roads into one-way routes, favourable to their closure as had been a previous threat.

According to the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, as former mayor, Mónica Lorente, said that the Alicante government had approved a grant to pay for this work, the Orihuela council hope that Alicante will foot the 50,000 euro bill, half of which will go towards job creation, as per the terms of the grant award, thus giving some unemployed people at least some work whilst the project is carried out.

However, as there was some confusion as to where the money from Alicante could be spent in the past, as Lorente wanted to share it between two projects, which, according to the town hall was not possible under the guidelines presented by Alicante, should the money not be available then the work can be funded locally.

The town hall of Orihuela has also obtained another quote for the cliff retaining work needed at Cala Capitan. Once the most appropriate quote has been approved, work can begin on securing that crumbling cliff, and repairing the walkway underneath, after natural erosion caused rocks to slip and fall during the summer. Permission from the Alicante coastal department has already been obtained, and so there should be no additional delays to that work.
