CLARO TO CONTEST THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS WITHOUT PRE-ELECTORAL PACTS

At a time when different parties and groups are making decisions about whether and how they will participate in the May, 2015 municipal elections, C.L.A.R.O.’s Executive adopted the following declaration.

C.L.A.R.O. will contest the next municipal elections in Orihuela on its own, as an independent party without entering into pre-election alliances or agreements with any other party or group.

C.L.A.R.O’S experience in an electoral alliance in 2011 with the Centro Liberal Renovador (CLR) party was disastrous and its experience later of an agreement with the Popular Party of Orihuela was equally disappointing. The CLR-CLARO electoral alliance of 2011 was threatened from the start by the attitude of Clr. Instead of entering the government of Montserrate Guillen immediately after voting for him as Mayor, Clr delayed and were widely believed to be plotting behind the back of the Mayor and those who supported the government he formed in order to bring about its downfall and its replacement by a Popular Party government. After a 3 week delay, Clr entered the government. In the following months, they sought systematically to reduce the competences, resources and budget of the C.L.A.R.O. Councillor for the Coast. In November, 2011, four months after entering into the government, Pedro Mancebo and Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas took the lead in expelling Bob Houliston from the CLR-CLARO municipal group, again in order to reduce his rights as a councillor. To justify the expulsion, they claimed falsely, without any basis in fact, only the assertions of Modesto Veloso, who had already resigned from C.L.A.R.O. after failing to disrupt the Executive Committee of the party, that C.L.A.R.O. was negotiating with the Popular Party to bring down the government.

Pedro Mancebo and Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas insist on using the description “CLR-CLARO” although they have both been expelled from the Electoral Coalition CLR-CLARO and politically, the Coalition is completely broken and has been since 2011. However, legally it remains valid in a limited number of areas (principally the joint CLR-CLARO electoral list, as can be seen since the resignation as a councillor of Asuncion Mayoral) until 31 March, 2015 the day the May, 2015 municipal elections are officially declared. Therefore on 31 March it will legally and definitively expire. RIP. No doubt until then Clr will continue to use the description CLR-CLARO for whatever political advantages they mistakenly think it gives them.

This experience and the lies which have been perpetrated by Clr regarding C.L.A.R.O.’s political record have convinced the party that C.L.A.R.O. must fight the forthcoming election entirely on its own without any pre-election alliance or agreement with any other party or group.

C.L.A.R.O. is a local party born of the need to correct injustices and unfairness in the government of Orihuela Costa. We are a democratically run party without political ideology. The first initials of our name stand for Closeness to the People and Honesty. Our task in Orihuela Costa has been to create, in a diverse, multi-national population, a political consciousness and determination to participate in local government. We believe in integration and have never supported separation from Orihuela. We believe that the municipality of Orihuela with its great geographic dispersion and its diverse population should be governed on a decentralized basis with government being conducted as close as possible to the citizens affected by its decisions. This will require transparency and openness. In response to the many people worried by the present fragmented and uncertain political situation in Orihuela, C.L.A.R.O. will offer to the voters in May the promise that we will work for change, fairness and efficiency on behalf of all those living in the municipality.
