A maritime storm has resulted in thousands of jellyfish landing on Arenal beach in Jávea (Alicante).
The beach on Friday was a blanket of sea creatures, most of which were collected by town hall cleaners after causing initial alarm amongst visitors, although given the weather conditions on Friday the beach was not set to be used by many.
The jellyfish are said to belong to the species “pelagia nocticula”, which have a slight blue glow, and swim in swarms at the waterfront. They are also known to sting.
Meanwhile, in the town of Benalmadena (Málaga), rained-off beachgoers would have had a bigger shock as part of a structure that looked like an oil platform washed up on the beach.
