The European Commission has approved 450 million euro for Spain, for the compensation of the additional costs of industrial companies with activity in Spain, incurred in 2022, derived from the exceptional increase in natural gas prices.
For the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Héctor Gómez, “with this aid we reinforce our commitment to the sectors most affected by the war in Ukraine and confirm that we continue to protect and promote our industry.”
Once the final authorisation of the European Commission has been obtained, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism will approve the regulatory bases of these aids. The measure has an endowment of 450 million euro in the form of a subsidy from the General State Budget, and will be implemented through a call that will open the period for submitting applications for companies before the summer.
The aid is based on the new Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework of the European Commission (section 2.4). It will make it possible to grant direct aid to gas-intensive companies, both SMEs and large companies, before the end of 2023 to reduce the impact of the price of natural gas and the price of heat production in cogeneration plants using natural gas.
The activities included in the aid line cover sectors such as ceramics, tiles, paper, glass, iron, steel, aluminium, synthetic fibres and food products, artificial and synthetic fibres, among others.
As a complement to this line of aid, the Council of Ministers approved on December 27, 2022 an ICO-Ukraine line of 500 million euro for companies in the gas-intensive industry, in order to be able to provide special public support for the financing of this sector, especially affected by the increase in energy costs.
