The fish and seafood company, Nueva Pescanova, has built the first octopus farm in the world in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It is expected that when it becomes operational, at least 300,000 captive octopuses will be killed each year.
The Spanish company plans to kill them with ice, placing them in containers of water at -3°C , despite the fact that there are studies that have shown that this slaughter method that uses “ice sludge” causes a slow and stressful death in fish.
This is due to the AnimaNaturalis animal welfare organisation, who have organised a protest to take place this Sunday.
According to the group, in the specific case of octopuses, which are capable of living up to four years, they should never be raised to be sold as food. They are solitary, curious, and highly intelligent, so putting them in tanks without cognitive stimulation will cause them intense suffering.
AnimaNaturalis together with Eurogroup for Animals, Acción Oceanos and Raíces & Brotes will carry out the protest action to express rejection of this octopus farm, with the launch of the #BanOctopusFarming campaign and deliver information to citizens.
Everyone is invited to participate in the action that will take place on Sunday May 21 in front of the Ministry of Agriculture in Madrid. They will meet at 10:30 a.m. to give the protest instructions and deliver the material. The action will begin promptly at 11:00 a.m. in Plaza de la Infanta Isabel, 1, in front of the Ministry of Agriculture, fishing and food.
Activists had already protested last weekend in La Palmas in Gran Canaria.
