As the country heads towards another long, hot summer, and despite rainfall in certain areas, Spain is still suffering a drought and rain is still considerably less than normal, according to the latest report on rain in Spain issued this week by AEMET, the state meteorological body.
The national average value of accumulated rainfall from the beginning of the hydrological year (October 1, 2022) until June 20, 2023 is estimated at 464 l/m 2, which represents around 15% less than the normal value corresponding to said period (545 l/m 2).
The accumulated amounts are below their normal values ​​in a large part of the Peninsula and the archipelagos, highlighting the northeast quadrant and the southern half. In the northeast and southwest quadrants of the peninsula and most of the Canary Islands, 75% of the normal value is not reached.
During the period from June 14 to 20, the rainfall mainly to the northern half of the Peninsula, to points in the southeast quadrant, to the northern half of the island of Mallorca and Menorca, and to the north of the island of Tenerife and inland Gran Canaria.
10 mm were exceeded throughout the Cantabrian coast, in eastern Castilla y León, in La Rioja, Navarra and Aragón and in the province of Lleida. The most notable amounts, with more than 100 mm accumulated, occurred in the interior of the Basque Country and in the Huesca Pyrenees. Among the accumulated rainfall in main observatories, the following stand out: 66 mm in San Sebastián/Igueldo, 55 mm in Soria, 52 mm in Hondarribia/Malkarroa, 48 mm at Bilbao airport, 46 mm in Pontevedra and 37 mm in Oviedo.
On the 21st, the rainfall, in the form of a storm, was distributed over large areas of the Peninsula, with more than 30 mm at points in the Pyrenees and the Iberian system.
