When we have an emergency, sometimes we don’t know which number we have to use. And the truth is that it is always advisable to have a list of those numbers that you may be forced to call if you have any problems or unforeseen circumstances.
The most important telephone number to know is 112. That number, 112, summons emergency help for any situation, and the operators speak English, unlike many of the other services we will list. If you call 112, you should first make yourself aware of your exact location in order to make it easier for help to be sent.
A word of note for British visitors to Spain, despite persistent internet rumours, the telephone number 999 does NOT work in Spain. 112 is the European emergency number.
The most important phone numbers
In the following list, you will have complete information on the telephone numbers that we may need at any given moment in our lives. Remember though, you may need to be able to speak Spanish.

For any emergency, 112 is the number that connects you with Health Emergencies, Firefighters, Civil Protection or Security Forces. Once the call is activated, all police, health, firefighting, rescue and Civil Protection resources will be activated to meet the citizen’s demand. 112 will also work if you do not have mobile coverage on your network, and even if the phone is locked or without a sim card.

For example, if a relative has disappeared, you can immediately call 062 of the Guardia Civil. The Guardia Civil are also responsible for traffic policing on a national level.
