The Guardia Civil has closed the first training course for instructors of canine equipment to detect explosives, weapons and ammunition for personnel of the Border and Customs Guard of Ukraine.
For five months, officers from the Guardia Civil’s Cynological Service have taught eight Ukrainian border and customs guards how to work with their police dogs to detect explosives, weapons and ammunition.
In the farewell ceremony held at the Guardia Civil dog training centre in El Pardo, in Madrid, the students have collected their title that accredits them as canine team instructors. In addition, the Guardia Civil officers who have completed the seventh Corps dog guide course have also collected their distinction.
This course was planned by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which requested the training of Ukrainian personnel in 2021. The objective was to train personnel from its Member States in the fight against illicit arms trafficking, especially small arms and light weapons.
It was planned to carry out the training in Ukraine but due to the outbreak of the war it was organised in Spain. The experience of the agents that make up the Guardia Civil dog training centre has allowed Ukrainian students to perfect their techniques as canine guides and perform their police duties against illicit arms trafficking in their country in an efficient manner.
