New Spanish sign language regulatory rules from January

The new regulation that will regulate the conditions of use of Spanish sign language will enter into force on 2 January 2024.

The newly approved rules regulate the conditions for the use of Spanish sign language and the means of supporting oral communication for deaf, hard of hearing and deafblind people.

The decree, which is born from a consensus of all the organisations of deaf and deafblind people and their families and has the support of the CERMI movement, guarantees the free choice of language between the use of Spanish sign language and the oral language through of the means of support for oral communication, as well as through the express regulation of new areas in which the conditions for the use of Spanish sign language and of the means of support for oral communication are determined.

It also adapts Spanish legislation to the International Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities, following the recommendations of the United Nations Committee of 2019, as detailed in the Official State Gazette (BOE) this week, where the norm has been published, after the approval by the Council of Ministers.
