Air and Space Force has first female General

Loreto Gutiérrez Hurtado has made history by being appointed as the first woman to reach the rank of General in the Spanish Air and Space Force, being only the fourth woman to be promoted to the highest position in the Spanish Armed Forces.

This historic achievement reflects the gradual normalisation of the role of women in Spanish military aviation since their admission in 1988. Specifically, the Air and Space Force is the military body that has incorporated the most women, but still with only 13% among the ranks.

Loreto Gutiérrez Hurtado, born in 1970, was a colonel and in charge of the Transport Aircraft and Maritime Patrol Section of the Logistics Support Command of the Air Force. She is an aeronautical engineer from the Polytechnic University of Madrid and graduated from the General Air Academy in San Javier in 1996. Throughout her career, she held various posts, such as the Armament and Material Directorate, where she supervised transport aircraft programs / multipurpose tankers.

Loreto Gutiérrez Hurtado also participated in international missions in Indonesia, Afghanistan and Chad, receiving merit awards for her work in peacekeeping operations. She has completed several courses, including the Armed Forces General Staff and High Logistics Management. In addition, she has decorations such as the Cross and Commendation of the Royal and Military Order of San Hermenegildo and several Crosses for Aeronautical Merit with a white badge, among others.
