The first section of the Provincial Court of A Coruña has condemned, by agreement of the parties, a permanent employee of the State Postal and Telegraph Company for not distributing or delivering, between February and July 2019, “a multitude of letters, packages and shipments that he had entrusted for his professional work.”
Specifically, he has been sentenced to a year and a half in prison and the payment of a fine of 1,080 euro. In addition, it has disqualified him, for three and a half years, from employment or public office and from carrying out any work related to postal and parcel delivery activities, as well as from performing any function for the State Post and Telegraph Company.
The Court has condemned him as the author of a continuing crime of infidelity in the custody of documents and has taken into account the mitigating circumstances of acting due to his serious addiction to alcoholic beverages and undue delays.
Thus, the ruling states that Correos began an internal investigation after the “multitude of complaints” from the area’s residents. On July 9, 2019, during a voluntary search of his private vehicle, his superiors found hidden and accumulated some 3,600 shipments that were not properly distributed. On August 16, 2019, according to the ruling, the office manager found 98 undelivered ordinary shipments in the defendant’s open locker.
The shipments that the accused improperly accumulated were finally distributed through urgent procedures of the State Postal and Telegraph Company, without any injured party having made a claim. The Court indicates in the resolution that the convicted man committed the acts “because of the alcoholism that he has been suffering from for a long time.”
