On Wednesday, Civil Protection will activate a test of the chemical risk sirens and send alert messages to the mobile phones of the population of 12 municipalities, in the regions of Vallès Occidental (mid-east), Vallès Oriental, the Bages, Berguedà, Selva and the Aran Valley.
The PLASEQCAT chemical risk sirens will sound for 15 minutes, which in a real case will serve to inform that it is necessary to confine oneself, and Civil Protection will also send the notices to all mobile phones in areas where there are sound alerts to inform that they are carrying out a test.
In a media address, the general director of Civil Protection, Marta Cassany, stated: “Siren tests are very important because what we do is raise awareness among the population” located in areas with chemical risk.
“It is important that we know the sound of the siren and this action process,” said Cassany, who also added that this warning will be parallel to what the mobile phones in the area will receive, and that in a real case they would indicate the need for confine yourself to a safe place.
The drill does not require confinement, although Civil Protection encourages everyone to practice it and remembers the basic advice in the event of a chemical incident: lock yourself in the building where you are or the closest one and close doors, windows and any other ventilation outside.
In addition, Civil Protection has created a survey to assess the hearing of the sirens and whether the alert has been received on the mobile phone in the test areas.
The survey can be answered through any mobile phone, it is anonymous and does not collect personal data, but it allows them to know if the sirens have been heard and where they have been heard from.
In Wednesday’s test, 2 PLASEQCAT chemical risk sirens will be activated in 12 towns, such as Castellgalí, Granollers, Gualba, Les, Montornés del Vallés, Parets del Vallés, Polinyà, Puig-Reig, Riells and Viabrea, Sant Celoni, San Vicente de Castellet and Santa Perpetua de Mogoda.
The sirens will also be heard in the municipalities of Barberà del Vallés, Canovelles, las Franquesas del Vallés, Lliçà de Vall, Montmeló and Vilanova del Vallès, due to the proximity of these municipalities to the sound installations of emergency warnings.
Different format
The population counted in the theoretical coverage of the chemical risk sirens of the October 18 test is 112,359 inhabitants.
In the municipalities where the test on October 18 will be carried out, there are 53 chemical risk establishments that are part of the scope of PLASEQCAT.
Regarding the sending of the Civil Protection alert to mobile phones, the reception area will not fully coincide with the hearing area of the chemical risk sirens, since the distribution of the telephone antennas that act as a repeater and the coverage of the hearing of the sirens does not fully coincide and will possibly include a space greater than the sirens’ hearing area.
However, citizens with the alert information will be able to know what is happening, in what area and what the measure is, so they could identify if they are in the space where this measure should be applied.
