The trial begins today, Tuesday, in the second section of the Provincial Court of A Coruña, against two men accused of trying to rob El Corte Ingles in A Coruña and a Burger King in Lugo in the month of January, for which the Prosecutor’s Office requests more than 20 years in prison.
As detailed in its letter by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, after 9:00 p.m. on January 17, the accused took possession of a vehicle that its owner was parking in the vicinity of calles Golpa and Nelson Mandela in Oleiros.
In that vehicle, they went to calle Ramón y Cajal in A Coruña, where they parked in front of El Corte Inglés with the purpose of “taking any of the items of certain value that were displayed for sale on the ground floor of the local”.
Thus, they entered the store with their faces covered and one of them sprayed the security guard with “an irritant spray”, while the other activated a fire extinguisher that he had with him to cause a cloud with the gas that was released that eliminated any field of vision. However, shortly afterwards another member of the security team arrived, so they decided to escape towards the public road, where they were intercepted by one of the security guards, with whom they struggled and managed to escape to get into the car and flee the place.
Aboard that car, the accused began a trip to the city of Lugo and, specifically, around 11:00 p.m. they arrived at the As Termas shopping centre.
There, they entered the Burger King in an area where a cash register was stored, which they managed to take before fleeing again in the stolen vehicle.
Unbeknown to them, thanks to the geolocation system available to the vehicle owner, in addition to the notices disseminated among the security forces and bodies, they were located driving along Infanta Elena Avenue, shortly after taking the A-6 motorway in the direction of A Coruna.
At that moment, police officers organised a device to block the vehicle at kilometre 479 of this road, and when they reached it, the accused, “without being able to determine which of them was driving at that moment, reduced their speed. and they managed to slip through the smallest gap left by the vehicles placed there.”
After this, pursued by other police vehicles, they continued traveling on the motorway “at high speed” and lost control of the vehicle, which ended up crashing. Immediately afterwards, both abandoned the car and fled on foot to avoid being captured.
The next day, shortly before 2:30 p.m., they were located in the municipality of Baralla by Guardia Civil agents, who requested their documentation. One of them stated that he did not have an accreditation document and gave an identity that was not his, as did the other accused, who showed another person’s ID.
However, they were immediately arrested and brought to justice, decreeing the imprisonment of one of them, since the other was transferred to a hospital for the injuries suffered in the crash, although after receiving medical discharge he was also admitted to provisional prison.
Due to these facts, for both accused the Prosecutor’s Office requests six years and six months in prison for theft of use of a motor vehicle with violence and intimidation; four years and ten months for robbery with violence and intimidation; two years and three months for the crime of less serious injuries in assault; a fine of three months, with a daily fee of eight euro for another crime of minor injuries; and six years in prison for the completed crime of robbery with force.
Furthermore, for one of them, the Prosecutor’s Office also requests ten months in prison for improper use of an authentic official document by someone who is not authorised to do so.
