The number of unemployed people registered in the offices of the State Public Employment Service (SEPE), at the end of December 2023, has decreased by 27,375 (-1%) compared to the previous month.
In year-on-year terms, unemployment has decreased by 130,197 people (-4.59%). 2023 has therefore been a very positive year in terms of employment despite the uncertainty of the international situation.
Registered unemployment stood at 2,707,456 people, the lowest figure for this month since 2007, before the outbreak of the financial crisis.
Unemployment by economic sectors
Compared to the month of November 2023, registered unemployment decreases in the Services sectors, by 25,158 people (-1.28%); in Agriculture, by 1,965 people (-1.97%), and among the group Without Previous Employment, by 7,018 people (-2.80%).
It increases in Construction with 5,285 more unemployed and layoffs (2.53%) and in Industry where 1,481 more people are registered (0.69%).
Unemployment by sex and age
The drop in unemployment in December especially benefits women, since unemployment fell by 28,120 people (-1.71%) that month, bringing the total to 1,616,973.
Male unemployment increased slightly by 745 men (0.07%) to a total of 1,090,483, rising by 745 (0.07%).
If we compare it with December 2022, female unemployment falls by 73,175 (-4.33%) and male unemployment falls by 57,022 (-4.97%).
Unemployment of young people under 25 years of age decreased in the month of December by 12,014 people (-5.83%) compared to the previous month and is the lowest in the historical series with a total of 193,965.
Unemployment by autonomous communities
Unemployment drops in 14 autonomous communities. It increases in Catalonia (3,474), Valencian Community (885) and hardly changes in La Rioja (160).
In year-on-year terms, unemployment falls especially in the Balearic Islands, Aragon and Galicia.
The total number of contracts registered during the month of December was 1,116,153. Of this total, 414,562 employment contracts are of an indefinite nature, representing 37.14% of all contracts.
In 2023, permanent contracts have been consolidated since 6,620,983 new stable contracts have been signed within the framework of the labour reform.
Young people have especially benefited: 42.6% of the contracts they sign are indefinite, a percentage that is six times the average from 2006 to 2021.
The sectors in which stability has been most favoured in these two years of labour reform have been Agriculture and Construction. This year, 72% of the contracts registered in Construction have been indefinite and 52% in the case of Agriculture.
Furthermore, in 2023 the lowest number of temporary contracts in the series have been signed: 8,823,222. They represent 21.8% less than the previous year and around half of those signed annually in the period 2015-2019.
