Visitors to Torrevieja this summer who may have needed to spend a penny in one of the new 300,000 euro public toilets, and by penny we mean 50 cents, have had to continue cross-legged as despite the fanfare from the town hall when the contract was finally awarded, they remain closed.
Although there is no explanation as to why they are still not open, spokesperson for the PSOE in the town, Bárbara Soler, has lamented that “something very necessary in Torrevieja is delayed so much and, in the end, they are going to open after the summer, it is another of the hallmarks of the PP, the lack of foresight. They are always late for everything.”
It was at the end of May when they began to be installed in various areas of the municipality. Some in very busy spaces in the town, such as the Plaza de Waldo Calero, the Paseo Vista Alegre and Paseo Juan Aparicio, amongst others, but they have been fenced off and locked for the entire summer so far.
The public toilets are pay-to-use, at a cost of an exact amount of a 50 cent coin and incorporate a device that sounds an audible warning if you have taken too long to do your business, although the time allowed is 15 minutes, or at least would be if they were open.
