The Government is to force media outlets, such as newspapers, news websites, and radio stations, to register with the Competition and Markets Commission (CNMC) and provide full details in the interest of transparency of advertisers, backers, revenue, ownership, and more.
The CNMC will be tasked first with creating a register of media outlets which will allow the information to be made available to the public within the framework of the Democratic Regeneration Plan, which the Executive presented this Tuesday.
“This registry will be prepared and supervised by an independent body, and, in this case, we have decided that it will be the National Securities Market and Competition Commission (CNMC),” announced the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, at the press conference following the Council of Ministers.
In this regard, he has announced that the said commission will be “reformed” with the aim of “being able to assume these powers”.
