The Guardia Civil’s Judicial Police Unit in Huesca dismantled a human trafficking ring involved in sexual exploitation, following a coordinated investigation that spanned both Huesca and Madrid.
Dubbed Operation “DESCARNADO”, the probe began late last year after a NGO alerted authorities to the distress of a South American woman trafficked to Spain under false pretences. Promised legitimate employment, she was forced into prostitution, isolated in a hotel, and coerced into paying off a fictional debt under threat to her and her family.
Using meticulous surveillance and undercover operations, investigators identified key members of the trafficking ring, including the ringleader, who sexually assaulted the victim. In April, joint raids were carried out across Madrid and Huesca. The ringleader, along with two accomplices — one Spanish and one Peruvian national — were arrested. All faced charges of human trafficking, sexual assault, membership of a criminal organisation, and money laundering. The leader has since been remanded in custody.
While the primary arrests were in Madrid, Huesca-based officers arrested a further individual involved in transporting and accommodating the victim. Forensic evidence and digital documentation seized during the operation was instrumental in corroborating victim testimonies and mapping the network’s structure.
A Guardia Civil statement underlined the operation’s success:
“This dismantling is a significant blow against human trafficking in Spain,” emphasising the vital role of cross-border cooperation and NGO reporting in rescue efforts.
Investigators are also working to identify additional victims, believing the network may have exploited other vulnerable individuals.
