Before setting off on a summer journey, spending just a few minutes preparing both yourself and your vehicle can help prevent many of the most common roadside problems.
Start by making sure you are well rested, hydrated and fit to drive. Then carry out a quick walk around your vehicle, checking for low tyres, fluid leaks, damaged lights or anything that looks out of place.
Under the bonnet, check the engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and windscreen washer fluid. Inspect your tyres for correct pressures, sufficient tread depth and signs of damage, especially if your vehicle is carrying extra passengers or luggage.
Clean the windows, mirrors and lights to maximise visibility, and confirm you have your driving licence, vehicle documents and any other paperwork you may need. Plan your route in advance, checking for roadworks, weather conditions and suitable fuel or charging stops.
Pack the car carefully, keeping heavy luggage low in the boot and securing loose items. Keep essentials such as drinking water, medication, sunglasses and a phone charger within easy reach.
A successful journey is about more than reaching your destination. A little preparation before you leave can make your trip safer, more comfortable and far more enjoyable.
