Traffic Lights Are Changing. The Driver’s Responsibility Is Not.

New traffic-light sequencing will provide clearer protection for pedestrians at signal-controlled crossings from 1 October 2026.

But drivers should not confuse a change in sequence with a change in responsibility. A fixed amber light still means stop unless stopping safely is impossible, while flashing amber has a different meaning.

Most importantly, drivers should anticipate that pedestrians may behave unexpectedly and recognise that the vehicle is capable of causing the greatest harm.

Better signals can help, but only attentive drivers can turn them into genuine safety.
