Mariano Rajoy travelled to the Vatican to attend the Solemn Mass for the Initiation of the new pope Francis 1. He was accompanied their Royal Highnesses, the Prince and Princess of Asturias, who led the Spanish delegation attending the event.
The party also included the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, José Manuel García-Margallo, the Minister for Justice, Alberto Ruiz Gallardón, and the Minister for Home Affairs, Jorge Fernández Díaz.
During the ceremony, Pope Francis received his pallium and the Fishermen’s Ring, after which he celebrated Mass to commemorate the start of his Ministry.
The event was attended by 132 official delegations. In total, six reigning monarchs were present (including those of Belgium and Monaco), 31 Heads of State or of international organisations, three crown princes (Spain, the Netherlands and Bahrain) and 11 Heads of Government, as well as delegations led by first ladies, vice-presidents, deputy prime ministers, speakers of houses of parliament, ministers, ambassadors and other dignitaries.
