Despite summer like conditions on the Costa Blanca, much of Spain has been swamped in bad weather this week, with road closures, bridge collapses and a number of fatalities as a result of the weather conditions. A truck and a passenger car crashed into a river in Ciudad Real after a road bridge over the river collapsed beneath them, killing three people.
During the recent collation of information on birds on the Iberian Peninsula, ornithologists have identified 56 new species in the past seven years, bringing the total to 569 species, of which 206 are classed as “oddities”, which is the classification for birds considered vagrant or rare. There has also been a reclassification of a number of birds, separating some old genres, such as the case for the Blue Tit, amongst others, which now has two groups, common and Canary.
In a worrying return for resident to the events of 2011, the small Canary island of El Hierro has suffered over 2,000 earthquakes, the equivalent of being rocked by 2.39 tons of TNT. The largest earthquake had a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale and was felt on neighbouring islands. In the two week period between the 17th and 31st of March, the National Geographic Institute teams recorded 2086 earthquakes in El Hierro, which have caused damage forcing the closure of several. The most rocking day was the 24th of March, with 232 tremors, and 212 the day after, followed by 203 on the 28th. Similarly, the area around Lorca has been suffering a number of earthquakes over the last few months, which this week was also registering up to magnitude 4 on the Richter scale.
