Boat Fishing
‘Mike the Watch’, ‘Moray Jeremy’, ‘El Pinar Mike’ and Tom joined ‘Orca Steve’ for a day’s fishing out on his boat. It was the first decent break in the windy weather for weeks and it made the day more enjoyable even though it was still chilly.
First they tried fishing the area opposite the big Garrucha hotels near to the River Aguas valley opening but without any luck so he moved the boat to an old favourite area opposite the Garrucha lighthouse but again without a bite.
Steve hasn’t fished the deep holes behind the harbour wall recently so gave the 270ft crevice a try but again without a fish. The Garmin fish finder came in very handy on this occasion and they travelled about looking for signs of fish life which they eventually found in 60ft of water near to the old stone train unloading dock.
The lads caught pandoras, pickerels, combers, pouting, a small red snapper and bogues. It seems the fish are in the shallows albeit only the smaller ones but guess the large predators are close by, we just have to bag them.

I went out with Steve for a day’s fishing and was joined by ‘Chef Jeremy’ and ‘Tubby Jimmy’. In almost windless conditions we first tried a 420 foot shelf halfway down an 800 foot hole in front of the Garrucha Harbour Wall. Nothing for over an hour and I wasn’t surprised the anchor rope came up smothered in brown mud. Mud I believe from last year’s floods and good reason why we are still struggling to catch fish in an area where before we caught some good fish. Congers to 65lbs, red snappers and meagre to 10lbs, black bream to 7lbs and twin banded bream to 5lbs just to mention a few and it all seems a long time ago.
We tried various depths and areas in front of Garrucha’s Harbour wall without success and it wasn’t until we fished in front of the Repsol garage on the Mojacar to Garrucha road in only 40 to 70 feet we began to catch. In fact it was a bite a drop and we caught a weaver and a comber plus dozens of pickerels and pandoras.
It was noticeable the big pandoras weighing well over a pound were all taken on blue feathers baited with prawn. Pickerel as usual committed suicide and at least half were foul hooked in the eye! It must be said how beautiful the, I presume, male pickerels are at the moment in what I again presume are their mating colours.

Shore Fishing.
‘London Bill’ is still catching a few fish and most are coming from the area between the big hotels and the Repsol garage with his favourite spot being by the roundabout in the middle of that stretch. Night times are best with dusk coming close and dawn in third place.
I thought the selling of undersize fish was banned when I saw this tray full of them for sale in Mercadona. There is a 2 or 3 inch long John Dory in that pile, one of the best eating and most sought after fish in the Mediterranean.
At the same time I have to think as a by catch maybe there is little one can do, only throw them back dead or bring them ashore to sell them. There is something else they could do, to have nets with big enough holes not to catch them in the first place.

Coarse Fishing.
This week’s ‘Rods and Reels’ club match was held on the Embalse de Pedrera, Murcia. As stated last week the water was going down, well, what a change in the week the level had come up about 3ft. During the match the water level rose about 6 inches! So, it looks like now that they will be filling it maybe to the level it was. (No fishing then, until it drops). The water temperature is rising slowly, but at present there is no sign of bleak or plenty of fish on the waggler line.
Another rare day as well there was no blanks.

‘The ‘Abbey Angling’ club match was fished at Nancy’s. The river and all the waterways around us are in a state of flood at present and all the reservoirs are filled to capacity, so the recent rain falling up country is coming straight into the rivers as the reservoirs cannot hold any more at present.
The water at Nancy’s was very coloured and also flowing fast below the boom, making fishing difficult. The pegs either side of the river by the car park being probably the best two pegs of the day, producing the top two weights
1st Stan (The Man) Roberts with 20.1/2lbs fishing the pole using paste.
2nd Andy (The Web Man) Stevenson with 17lbs fishing the Pole using corn.
3rd Doug (The Welsh Gold miner) Hornblow with 11.1/2lbs fishing the pole using maggot.

Latest license information.
There is now a loophole for those wanting coarse fishing licenses for Andalucia who don’t have NIE documents or/and don’t want to do the 24 hour course in Spanish, see me for more details. The only loophole left for fishing the beaches and boats in Andalucia without an NIE document is to make a trip to Murcia.
