The Guardia Civil have arrested 11 people, all of whom are said to be of Moroccan nationality, facing charges of being involved in 45 thefts from farms across Murcia, Albacete, Alicante, Jaén and Granada, as well as 9 thefts from motor vehicles. The arrests are as a result of an investigation which started in June 2012, following an increase in crimes of this nature. The market value of stolen goods recovered is said to be in the region of 100,000 euro, whereas the total loss, including economic damage, is far higher.

The Valencia courts have sentenced a man to seven years in prison for deliberately running over another man on a crossing, after the two had a previous disagreement, late at night, in which the injured party had allegedly insulted the driver´s girlfriend. An altercation had been calmed by police outside bars along an entertainment area in the town of Cullera in July, 2011. A large group of friends had been involved in a loud disagreement before the police advised one side of the arguing faction to go back to their hotel, to which they complied. However, the man in the centre of the arguable chivalrous act failed to calm down, shouted he was going to get his car and kill the flirtatious victim, which he apparently then sought to carry out, accelerating towards the man at the junction, colliding with him, the impact of which forced the victim onto the bonnet of the car and smashed the windscreen, then dragging him for about 40 metres along the road. A second victim was also run over at the same time, running over his feet and striking his arm. The guilty party has received both the custodial sentence and a 15,000 euro claim for compensation for the injuries inflicted.

A 69 year old man was admitted to a psychiatric hospital this week in Zaragoza, on suspicion of killing a 91 year old pensioner in the residential home where the pair lived. The cries of the victim, identified as Santiago DA, alerted staff to the scene where they found the victim bleeding profusely, with a trail of blood leading directly to the accused, Félix GV, who was showing signs of having committed an act of brutality by the marks on his hands and clothing. The alleged killer has so far refused to offer any information relating to the incident, although investigators believe it may have been an argument that got out of control.

A 48 year old man jumped from his 5th floor balcony to his death in Madrid on Wednesday, after the police had entered his home to search for evidence linking the man to a string of charges of sexual assault, corruption of minors and trafficking. Jesús Juan MA, who had no previous history of such offences, was arrested on three charges. Initially handcuffed during the search, his lawyer asked police to remove the restraints as the man was behaving peacefully, and he would then also be able to calm a large dog that also lived in the home. Having been twice to the kitchen to consume water, on a third trip was not he was not escorted by officers and ran off the balcony before they could restrain him, they then ran to the ground floor where they found his now lifeless body, the death being confirmed by medics called to the scene.
