The spirit of Shackelton visits the Fadura
Getxo Artea won the match against La Vila Rugby Club by 45-29 in a fairly even game that was entertaining throughout.
There was little riding on the result as a place in the top division was already guaranteed for the home side, and La Vila playing solely for pride with relegation being confirmed several weeks before.
The back line of the home side dominated the play for much of the game and were highly effective in attack, with Vila defending bravely against the onslaught.
However, for their part, the Alicantino forwards managed to break through the home defence on several occasions resulting in one try for prop Haeffeli, and two tries for back row Villalba. Scrum half Jiménez also went over for a try under the posts, securing an offensive bonus point for the away side.
For the Vileros, it was not only their final eighty minutes in the “División de Honor” this season, a farewell to the top flight of Spanish rugby, but also the last time that this group of players would play together the in the Vila shirt.
The inevitable changes that come at the end of each season as players move on for new challenges will be arguably even more emotional this year, as the players had become firmly united after facing a number of adversities and challenges in what turned out to be a difficult season for the team from Marina Baixa.
Like the famous Antartic explorer Ernest Shackelton, who, when his ship was trapped in the Weddell Sea for months, with the crew abandoning it to walk aimlessly over the ice miles from civilization, vowed “Our mission has failed.
We cannot cross the Antartic, but now we begin a new mission, more important than the last. We must stay together, and return the whole crew home safely” This mission, against all odds, was successful.
After their last game together at Fadura on Sunday, the rugby players from a small town called Villajoyosa came together in an eternal and unbreakable circle, each one thinking “We did it. We stayed together, until the end.” Perhaps Shackleton was smiling down on them.
