According to the judicial administrator, Ricardo Gonzalo Conde Díez, there are currently up to 100 bodies of unidentified people stored in the various offices of the Institute of Legal Medicine in Spain. American and Canadian teams typically use the name “John Doe”, or gender specific variation, as identity of bodies without identification.
The fact came about after a study into unexplained missing persons was launched, detailing the difficulties in identifying the bodies in the lab, and the subsequent association with records of those who are missing, especially given that after a certain period of time, these bodies go into a common grave.
Due to a lack of accurate data, the expert noted, there is a number “relatively important unidentified bodies”, although scientific advances in technology is making the identification of the body more reliable.
“The identification process requires comparison of data before death, usually from the missing person reports, and records after the death”, he continued, indicating that this practice corresponds to the National Coroners practice of judicial autopsy, determining the cause of death.
In his view, the proper management of dead bodies for identification would require coordination with the police with coroners and additionally, for identification purposes, you would need a software tool that allows the management of the data.
In Spain, the Ministry of the Interior has prepared a database of missing persons and human remains and has been in long talks with the department of Justice for collaboration, so that medical examiners can access these databases and exchange information with Forces and State Security. “Hopefully, in the coming months, concrete collaboration of both departments on the subject, respecting the data protection, will be achieved”, he said.
