An incident at Lavacolla airport at Santiago de Compostela, La Coruña, caused the two hour closure of the runway, resulting in an Easyjet flight to Switzerland and a Ryanair flight to Tenerife being delayed. For reasons which are being investigated, a single vehicle, an airport fire tender, crashed and rolled over on the runway whilst undergoing “a routine inspection”. The driver suffered a minor “scratch” to his arm and took the rest of the day off, whereas two cranes had to be called in to remove the vehicle before the airport could be reopened.
The pilot of an Iberia flight from London Heathrow to Madrid made a request to divert his aircraft this week, but not for reasons of an emergency or incident, but so that he could show his passengers the historic 3rd Century Roman walls of Lugo surrounding Galicia. Passengers on board the flight were somewhat surprised when Captain Ángel Aznárez first took to the public address system, greeting passengers in English, Italian and Spanish, so that nobody missed out, pointing out various cities as they fly by in their own private, guided tour of the skies. This is not the first time the pilot has caused controversy by giving his passengers a flight to remember, a similar incident in 2012 resulted in a series of “disagreements” between him and the company which they “ceased to reconcile”.
A maritime rescue helicopter successfully extracted 6 crew members, two Tunisians and 4 Egyptians, from on board the 60 metre ship “Theodoros”, which had sent a distress call, 32 miles south of Almería, after she began taking on water through the rotor shaft, flooding the engine room. Upon receiving the alert, the coast guard immediately dispatched a Helimer 202 helicopter and the salvage vessel, Sar Mastelero, the helicopter commencing the rescue immediately upon arrival at the scene.
