The government may be able to take away funding for health, education, infrastructure and more, but if there is one thing they will not move on, will not reduce, will not accept, it is calls to reduce investment in their own vanity.
Facing massive austerity measures across the country, one political group, the Izquierda Unida, considered the amount of money that the government pays on portraits of members of Congress was grossly over inflated, and they should agree to kerb spending on painting pictures of themselves to hang in the congressional building.
However, the notion was rejected this week by a majority vote of the ruling Partido Popular, who cannot imagine the hardship that a reduction in the cost of painting their portrait might result in.
Despite the claims by the IU that the 192,000 euro spent on the portrait of the former development minister, Francisco Álvarez Cascos, and the 82,000 euro spent on the picture of former congress president, José Bono, was far more than was necessary and that the money could be better invested in public services, the PP were outraged at the call that has been a “pictorial tradition of centuries”, which would be a “terrible mistake” to withdraw.
The Partido Popular member have said that they will form a committee to look at the possibility of making some savings, which are “less burdensome to the state”, as a compromise to the outrageous suggestion of withdrawing this necessity of existence.
