A 51 year old woman from Benicarló has been arrested after driving for 23 kilometres in the opposite direction of the AP7 motorway.
The Guardia Civil have reported that the incident occurred on Monday morning when they received numerous calls of a car travelling in the opposing direction to the flow of traffic on the Barcelona to Valencia motorway.
Officers quickly found the vehicle and gave chase, lights and sirens in use, whilst trying to stop the car. The driver ignored all warnings and continued, forcing other, oncoming motorists to take evasive action to avoid colliding with the kamikaze car.
After driving for 23 kilometres, the vehicle came to a stop and officers approached the driver to find a woman, whose identity corresponds with the initials M.S.S.M., who was also found to be driving under the influence of drugs, and duly arrested on suspicion of a crime against road safety and of driving under the influence of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
A swift appearance in court resulted in the immediate suspension of her license pending a trial.
