Officers from the Guardia Civil in Murcia have arrested a taxi driver who came to rescue a stranded family from a roadside breakdown, after a breath test proved the driver to be four times over the legal limit of alcohol.
The incident took place at kilometre 156 of the A-30 motorway at Puerto de la Cadena, in the Albacete direction, when a patrol noticed a broken down vehicle at the side of the road. The officers considered the location to be a “clear risk” because of the density of vehicles travelling on the road at the time.
The officers set up a protective procedure to guide vehicles past the disabled vehicle, which was occupied by two adults and three children who had been on holiday in Murcia.
In view of the inability to move the vehicle, the driver´s insurance company had arranged recovery, including a taxi to take the occupants away. When the taxi arrived, the officers say that they could see that the driver displayed “clear signs of being under the influence of substances incompatible with driving”, as he was stumbling whilst walking, had slurred speech and “a strong odour of alcohol on his breath”.
In view of their suspicions, the officers asked the taxi driver to perform a mandatory alcohol test, which yielded a result of 0.78 milligrams of alcohol per litre of exhaled air, when the maximum allowable limit for commercial or professional drivers is 0.15, an amount which is lower than the standard rate.
In view of the results of the test, the driver now faces a bad for up to four years, in addition to financial penalties for the offence of driving under the influence of alcohol.
