Despite the factually correct headline, the “Playa de Torrevieja” in question is not the actual beach of the city, but rather a 17 metre boat which is currently in the Placeres shipyard in Pontevedra.
Built in 1989 and carrying a Spanish flag, she has a length of 17.35 meters and a beam of 5.68 meters and has been in the yard since 2012.
Maritime laws governing the abandoned ships says that the State can claim the property of abandoned ships in port areas which have “stayed for more than three months docked, moored or anchored in the same place without appreciable activity, without having paid the corresponding fees or tariffs”.
As this ship falls into this category, the original owners now have no claim to the ship, which has now become the property of the state to dispose of as they see fit.
