Under the banner text of “whoever saves a life it is as though he had saved the lives of all mankind”, a line from the Quran, a blood donation campaign was launched for the first time across the Vega Baja, with 18 donation posts set up at the mosque in Almoradí, with doctors and nurses assembled through the transfusion service at Alicante, with the hope of gathering around 250 units of blood.
In reality, the Islamic community rallied to the cause with more enthusiasm than was anticipated, with around 300 units actually being collected.
Spokesman of the Islamic community, Mimoun El Bouanany, was pleased with the good reception of the blood drive, saying how blood transfusion is a social issue that transcends religions or colours of skin, “because blood is needed for many things and no one is free from having to resort to transfusions”.
Mimoun El Bouanany also took the opportunity to point out that mosques are much more than places of worship, but are cultural centres of the Islamic community; meeting and holding activities to enable the members to better “contribute to solidarity”.
All those who donated were treated to refreshments afterwards, including tea, to assist their recovery from their efforts to saving “all mankind”.
