Forty-five candles were lit last week in the entrance of the Ayuntamiento in remembrance of the women who died in 2013 at the hands of their partners. The ceremony was held on 25 November, to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
There followed a minute’s silence as a mark of revulsion at the violence and in memory of the victims after which helium filled balloons were released into the air.
Mayor Jose Fidel Ros said that such attacks were “A blatant attack on fundamental rights " adding that "we have an obligation to take positive action to make these rights real and effective ."
Later in the day events continued with a demonstration of self defense for women in the cultural centre after which the Murcian author Julia Romero launched her new book “Zorras” a study into 18 cases of domestic violence.
