It was revealed this week that two weeks after the Supreme Court confirmed the validity of the three year prison sentence handed down to the former mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernández Mateo, the Guardia Civil have wrote to the courts to request the revoking of his firearms and weapons license.
Sentenced to three years in prison in 2012 for rigging a 100 million euro contract, Hernández Mateo used the appeals process to challenge his conviction, a challenge which failed, although he still remains free whilst a clemency request is considered.
The document requesting the revocation was dated the 5th of November, requesting the withdrawal of the rights under the “Type E” weapons license held by Hernández Mateo, which qualified him to have up to 12 weapons in his possession, including the likes of hunting rifles, shotguns, compressed air and gas powered guns, machetes and knives. The licenses are granted for a periods of 5 years, although, in the case of those over 60, they should be certified every 2 years, as would be the case here.
The former mayor is waiting for the courts to meet to resolve his request for the suspension of his prison sentence, after nearly 2,500 signatories joined the petition for clemency, whereas, currently, almost 4,500 individuals have signed to indicate their desire to see him serve the prison term.
