The Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community has agreed to suspend the execution of the 3 year prison sentence handed down to the former mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Ángel Hernández Mateo of the Partido Popular, leaving the decision with the Central Government, also formed of the PP, to resolve his plea for clemency.
The decision was taken following a “favourable” report from the prosecutor, after the convicted criminal paid both his fine and legal costs on time, 10,500 euro and 12,000 euro respectively.
The court has now urged the minister of Justice to process the application for a pardon “urgently”, in view of the time now elapsed between when he was first found guilty and the final stage of the legal process confirming his sentence to be valid.
Hernández Mateo was found guilty and convicted in November, 2012, for trespass and forgery in a 100 million euro contract awarded to handle the municipal waste collection. He was disqualified from office for 7 years and sentenced to prison for 3.
