The express bus service between Torrevieja and Alicante-Elche airport carried 72,049 passengers in 2013, a favourable increase of 39.5% over 2012, but still considerably below the 100,000 anticipated annual passengers estimated when the service was launched in 2011.
The data has been published by the bus operator this week, revealing that the average daily passenger use was 197 per day, compared to 141 per day in 2012. More passengers began their journey at the airport end of the line, with 37,806 passengers joining at the terminal, as opposed to 34,243 who used the bus from Torrevieja.
July proved the most successful month, when a total of 9,473 passengers used the service, in August the figure was slightly lower with 9,126, the two months combined being accountable for 25% of the entire year´s passengers, with 18,599 collectively.
Departing Torrevieja on the odd hours between 07:00 and 21:00, returning from the airport on the even hours between 08:00 and 22:00, the cost of 6.92 euro is considerably cheaper than alternative travel options, with officially licensed taxis charging between 45 and 50 euro, depending on the time of day.
The data coincides with the announcement of a similar service due to be launched between Torrevieja and the high speed train network, although final details of that route are still to be confirmed.
