Children attending the Ciudad de Oviedo school on Tuesday morning found they had been locked out by an anonymous act of sabotage.
Facing closure in the next academic year, with the children having to be relocated, the school has been the scene of a number of protests over recent months. On Tuesday, three padlocks had been placed locking the gates to the grounds, and the locks of those padlocks sealed with silicone to prevent removal.
Nobody has yet claimed responsibility for the act, which is being seen as another form of protest to highlight the plight of the school attendees, but access was achieved at around 10:15 on the same morning, after the Local Police intervened to remove the locks.
The councillor for education in Torrevieja, Rosario Martinez Chazarra, claims that the town hall has done everything it can to prevent the closure, but as the nearby, recently refurbished school, and others around the city have 800 places on offer, they see no need to build this particular school, despite its community driven focus that tenders for an 80% immigrant subscription.
Not only will these local children have to be schooled away from their homes, they will no also be doing so under the threat of subsidy for school buses being withdrawn, thus increasing the educational costs for many who are already struggling in some of the less affluent areas of the city.
