According to the Spanish roads authority, the DGT, during their latest campaign on the use of seatbelts, which was in place between the 10th and 16th of this month, 428,593 vehicles were checked and 5,372 vehicle occupants were reported to offences relating to the use of seatbelts.
The good news is that the awareness campaigns appear to be working, as 99% of all vehicle occupants now use seatbelts.
However, the bad news is that during the campaign, a total of 318 children under 12 were identified as travelling in vehicles without using any type of restraint, 83 in the front seats and the rest, 235, were in the back.
The statistics relating to children are said to be of particular concern to the Directorate General of Traffic, since one of the objectives of the government´s road safety strategy is to ensure that no child loses their life by not sitting in the appropriate seat for their weight and size. The latest amendments to the road traffic act are aimed at this goal, prohibiting children from travelling in the front.
In addition to the 318 children who were travelling without any restraint, 5,054 adults were identified, 3,269 drivers and 1,785 passengers, of which 1,058 were in the front seats and 727 in the rear.
The aim of the campaign has been the message that the use of seat belts and child restraints is mandatory for all occupants of a vehicle, for any trip, short or long, as well as the importance of wearing the seatbelt and the protection they afford.
Keeping the vehicle occupants secure, the seatbelt is a “basic and fundamental” feature for road safety and its use has saved “thousands of lives”.
April´s campaign will focus once again on Speed, starting on the 31st of March, whereas in May, motorbikes will be the main subject for both awareness and compliance by the Guardia Civil and police.
