The Minister for Public Works, Ana Pastor, has announced that the Spanish airport authority, AENA, will freeze rates in 2015, rather than imposing the anticipated 4.5% increase in fees.
The announcement will be good news for airlines, as they will no longer have to pay more for using the airports of the country, a saving which should therefore be reflected in flight prices for passengers.
In 2014, the rise in airport charges was 0.9% compared to the 2.5% that legislation allowed, in order to offset the 18 billion euro investment over a decade.
Meanwhile, April saw an increase in passenger traffic, with more than 16.2 passenger movements in total, an increase of 9.2% over the same period of 2012.
The main airports of the country all saw an increase, with the newly named Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport seeing a 7.6% increase, Barcelona-El Prat grew by 10.8% and Alicante-Elche airport seeing a 9.6% increase, amongst others.
