Eight people appeared in court in Madrid on Tuesday, accused of belonging to a group engaged in illegally obtaining and distributing firearms. Three of them are serving members of the Guardia Civil.
According to the prosecutor, the three members of the Guardia Civil were employed in the armoury of the Guardia Civil and were therefore able to obtain the weapons to pass on to the other group members.
During the course of the investigation, numerous weapons were seized, including sub-machine guns, shotguns, rifles and pistols, as well as silencers, knives, gas sprays and other items, plus an undisclosed amount of cash.
Depending on their degree of participation in the group, those accused face penalties, at the request of the prosecution, from between three to eight years in prison.
