Officers from the Guardia Civil have arrested 5 people as suspects involved in a major scam of introducing horsemeat into the food chain with falsified documents declaring it as fit for human consumption.
Operation “Cavell” resulted in the search of farms, private farms, slaughterhouses and veterinary clinics in the provinces of Valencia, Asturias, La Coruña, Toledo, Avila, Madrid, Valladolid, Zaragoza and Jaen.
The organization deposited horses in different slaughterhouses in Spain, falsifying or altering their identification and disease control documents, in order for their meat to become destined for human consumption.
The operation is coordinated by the Judicial Police of Catalonia, supported by other law inforcement agencies, including SEPRONA, the environmental arm of the Guardia Civil, and the French Gendarmerie, as some of the detainees are related to another operation in France in December of last year for similar crimes.
Those arrested have been placed in the custody of the courts at Santa Coloma de Farners, Girona, whilst the investigators say that the case is still open and further arrests are not ruled out.
