As temperatures increased significantly in the middle of this week, we were reminded of the need to take proper precautions when out and about.
Every year the hottest coastal areas see many people suffer the effects of heat and sunstroke, some of which lead to tragedies such as these this week.
In Torrevieja on Wednesday, a man was seen to collapse in the street, falling into the sea, but rescuers could do nothing to save him. On the Orihuela Costa, near the Los Dolses school, a body lay in the street in similar circumstances.
With temperatures in the 30´s, the UV index was shown as 13 at the height of Wednesday, which is classed as “Extreme risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure”. The Violet alert means that everybody needs to take precautions, which include avoiding going out at the hottest times of day, walking in shade where possible, wearing sunglasses and using SPF 30+ sunscreen, covering the body with a long-sleeve shirt and trousers, wearing a very broad hat and drinking plenty of water.
The area was also on high alert for forest fires, with the risk near the highest possible, with caution also being asked to deal with rubbish and smoking paraphernalia to try to prevent inadvertent ignition.
