A potential disaster involving two passenger jets was narrowly avoided on Saturday, as an Aerolineas Argentinas Airbus A340-300, flying from Barcelona to Buenos Aires, crossed the runway in the path of a Boeing 767-300, just about to land on arrival from Moscow Domodedovo.
Reports indicate that the Airbus had already crossed the live runway twice, under the instructions of the Air Traffic Controllers, heading towards its own departure point. Without slowing, the aircraft then crossed the runway for the third time.
The crew of the incoming Boeing spotted the Airbus on the runway and performed an immediate “go around”, thus ascending clear of a potential disaster on the ground. According to data, the aircraft was less than 20 seconds from touching down, around 40 seconds from a lateral impact.
The Boeing aircraft positioned for another approach and landed safely about 15 minutes later, whereas the Airbus departed for Argentina about 20 minutes after the occurrence.
Following the incident, it was reported that the runway in question is normally inactive, and it is common for aircraft to taxi across it without stopping. This is also said to have caused a number of similar incidents in the past.
Spanish airport operator Aena stated that the Boeing could have continued the landing without any danger, the separation was sufficient, and the Airbus would have cleared its path. On Monday, Aena stated that an investigation has now been opened into the incident.
