ORIHUELA MAYOR UNDERGOES EMERGENCY HEART SURGERY

The mayor of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillén of the Los Verdes green party, was hospitalised at the weekend, suffering a heart condition.
In a statement, fellow green councillor, Manuel Gallud, along with government spokesperson, Carolina Gracia, explained how Guillén had been taken ill on Saturday evening from his home, complaining of chest pains.
He was taken to the Chiron Hospital of Torrevieja, where he was monitored in the intensive care unit, later to be transferred on Sunday to the General Hospital of Alicante, where he underwent surgery to install two “stents” in the heart.
He now remains in the intensive care unit at Alicante, although is condition is described as stables and “out of danger”. Gallud explained that under the circumstances, the physicians estimate that recovery could take between one and two months. He also said that “We want to thank the many people who offered signs of affection and concern for the health of the mayor”.
As a result of his current incapacitation from work, the first deputy mayor, Antonio Zapata of the PSOE, resumes the role as head of the municipality, whereas the responsibilities for urban and public safety matter will temporarily be taken on by Gallud.
