The 25th of August marks a dark day in the history of Torrevieja, as in 1938, the city was bombed by Italian aircraft.
It was a time during the Spanish Civil war, when the planes dropped 60 bombs onto the city, ripping through 25 homes and causing serious damage to buildings in the town centre and the port area, leaving 19 people dead and 45 injured, 25 of whom were civilians and 20 military.
Although shrouded in secrecy throughout history, like much of the Franco era, these days the horrific incident is remembered annually by those who religiously attend to reflect on a past time and remember those involved.
However, as in every year in modern times, one group that fails to recognise the atrocity and remember those who died is the authority which currently runs the city, the Partido Popular government led by Eduardo Dolón.
For years, local relatives, residents and opposition political figures have called for a permanent monument to be erected to the fallen, and for as long, those requests have been ignored or declined.
A representative from the local republican group leading the memorial said that they still deeply regret that “the city of Torrevieja has not responded to their demand for the placement of at least one plate with the names of the victims of this tragic event”.
