A union representing fruit farmers has described the amount offered by the European Union for compensation for sanctions against Russia as “ridiculous”.

The EU has agreed to grant 29.7 million euro for all European producers of peaches and nectarines for the withdrawal of both fruits from the Russian market, with an additional million more for promotion.

In a statement, the agricultural organization has explained that only those farmers who belong to an association can benefit from the priority price of 0.27 euro per kilo, which they claim does not even cover 75% of production cost, and that “barely half of the producers of peaches and nectarines are integrated in associations”. The compensation is to be back dated however, but only from the 11th of August, and many will only be able to earn 0.13 euro per kilo.

The fears are similar for citrus and pomegranate growers, who may be facing difficult seasons due to the weather condition, and now the inability to sell what stock they have, facing what they consider to be compensations that could jeopardise future crops.

Of the 82,124 hectares of peach and nectarine crops planted in Spain during 2013, a total of 5,396 were in Valencia, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
