3D INVEST

The Spanish government is to invest more than 21 million euro in printing company HP, to assist in the development of 3D printing technology. HP has had a presence in Spain since their factory opened in Sant Cugat del Vallès in 1985, where 2,600 employees currently work, of which 450 are highly specialised engineers.

LIFE ASSURED

Following industrial action earlier this year, fire fighters in Alicante will now be able to benefit from better working conditions, including a life insurance policy that pays out in the event of injury or death in the line of duty, or during any activities in their private life. The policy will even pay out in the event of suicide. Prior to the negotiations, other town hall workers had these benefits attached to their contract already, but fire fighters were excluded, believed to be a cost saving exercise on account of higher premiums for their high risk work.

COMPENSATING PRISONER

Following the announcement that she was to enter prison, Spanish singer Isabel Pantoja has cancelled her up and coming concert tour. Now, a consumer association is urging anybody who had tickets to see her to not only claim a full refund on the ticket price, but also any associated transport and other relevant costs.

MISSED TRAIN

The Spanish company providing trains for Calcutta´s East-West Metro has lost out on the contract, after its claim for escalating costs was turned down. Madrid based Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF), was set to manufacture 14 air-conditioned, six-carriage trains with a combined capacity of 2,136 passengers. The company had won the contract in 2009.

RESCUE MISSION

The Spanish government looks set to accept hundreds of Turkish orphans, after a rescue association reports some 20,000 children in the country have been left without parents, after they were killed by Islamic State militants. The Rescue Christians group says, “The Spanish foreign affairs department will negotiate with the Turkish government for the safe passage of orphans to the country of Spain where our organization will take care of the Children with the longer term objective of providing new loving homes for the orphaned.”

NUMBER´S UP

The vehicle licence plate reader was installed at Alicante-Elche airport this week, to clamp down on both legal and illegal taxi operators who operate from the airport without the appropriate licences. It was in March of this year that we reported how the councillor for transport in the municipality of Elche, Justino Delgado, confirmed the move to help prevent unlicensed, pirate taxis and those from outside the area, from accessing the location.

BENIDORM BOUND

A Boselaphus Tragocamelus antelope has been treated for laceration injuries in Benidorm, after its leg became trapped in a log. The treatment occurred after the incident took place in the Terra Natura animal park this week, when the animal had to be shot with a tranquiliser dart to enable medics to treat the injury. After suturing the wound under general anaesthetic, the animal is expected to make a full recovery in little over a week.

HASHTAG POLICING

Local police in the Valencia town of Rafal have reached out to the younger members of society by using their own hashtag on social network sites. Through their #PLRFL tag, they have already received questions relating to such subjects as bullying, violence and drugs, all of which have been answered. The police vehicles are also fitted with a barcode, enabling those with smartphone to contact them straight away in an initiative billed as the first of its kind whereas the police have reached out directly to members of their local communities in this way.

WEIGHING IT UP

The University’s of Alicante and Miguel Hernández de Elche, have conducted a nutrition study involving 285 local children on detailed as ‘The Influence of environmental variables on child overweight and obesity’, the aim of which is to assess the incidence of these diseases in early childhood. The study also included random tests on both physical activity and quality of sleep.

WE HAVE NO TOMATOES

The availability of the tomato consumption in Cataluña has seen a significant reduction in recent years, but whereas the basic fruit has reduced in numbers, the variety has increased in equal amounts. As the most commonly consumed natural foodstuff, accounting for 20% of all fruit and vegetable consumed, it is also responsible for 20% of the production in the area, but production dropped 40% in seven years, according to the Department of Agriculture.

MILKY BAR

Supermarket chain Mercadona has changed the packaging on its “Lactose Free” chocolate, after a consumer association highlighted that the product did in fact contain lactose. The new label will reflect the actual lactose content, although this has now also been reduced, and will to 0.05%. The change will start to be reflected in sore during December. The association is also urging better legislative regulation of lactose free products by the ministry of health.

MORE TOMATO NEWS

Spanish sausage skin manufacturer Viscofan has accepted a 55.5 million euro from private equity group Portobello Capital Gestion, fir its tinned tomato brand IAN. Subject to regulatory approval, Viscofan will receive 55 million upfront, the remaining balance three years after the sale. Portobello list ice cream manufacturers, insurance, women´s fashion, hospital catering and baby eels within their current portfolio.

BUST STOP

The socialist municipal group in Bigastro has denounced the ruling party for the poor state of the bus shelters and bus stops throughout the town. Most of the glass in the shelters has been shattered, canopies broken, seats uprooted and even much of the signage has disappeared. The Socialists say they are not interested in talking, they only want to see solutions.

MYSTERIOUS DEATH

The Guardia Civil Guard is investigating the death of a man whose body was found last week on Acequión beach in Torrevieja. A spokesperson said there were no obvious indications of how he died and certainly no signs of violence. The deceased, who was fully dressed, was said to be a German citizen, 65 years of age. The Judicial Police of the Guardia Civil says that an autopsy, which is currently being carried out, will provide the reason for his death.

SPRUCE UP

Daya Nueva and Benejúzar have received 63,000 euros from the Environmental Committee of the Council of Alicante to improve recreational areas in the towns within the sustainable investment plan. The adjoining neighborhood of Rojales received slightly less, the sum of 62.305 euros.
