The two new Guardia Civil patrol boats being built at the Astilleros Gondán shipyard in Vegadeo will be powered by Rolls Royce engines.
This is the first time that the Guardia Civil fleet has been powered by engines from the British institution, with the 40S Series waterjets offering lower fuel consumption, high towing capacity, acceleration, speed and manoeuvrability, factors which are ideal for vessels which normally operate in such complex sea conditions.
The manufacturers have recommended the Rolls Royce engines on account of their reliability and performance, which will drive the 20.5 metre long and 5 metre wide ships, constructed of aluminium and reinforced glass fibre.
The boats are expected to be delivered in the summer of 2015, and will focus mainly on surveillance missions and the fight against drug trafficking and illegal immigration, as well as serving as protection of the marine environment over the next 15 years, the expected life expectancy of the ships.
The 2000 hp Rolls-Royce waterjets will provide a speed of 25 knots and a range of 570 miles, as defined by the Guardia Civil, with space for a crew of 5 members and a surface radar with a range of 96 miles.
