AIDS has already killed 36 million people worldwide
AIDS has killed about 36 million people and, according to estimates, worldwide there are 35.3 million people infected, of which 3.34 million are children.
Most of them live in sub-Saharan Africa. It is estimated that every day, more than 700 children become infected. So terrifying is AIDS.
Margaret Ogola (pictured) was born on June 12, 1958 in Kenya. Married with six children, two of them adopted, she died of cancer when she was only 53 years old.
From 1994 to the end of her life, she was the medical director of Cottolengo Hospice, an orphanage for children with HIV / AIDS. At the time of her death, she directed the Commission of Catholic Secretariat, which coordinates 500 health units, serving about 5 million cases annually. Ogola’s life shines a serious and committed dedication to others and it is easy to see that much of it had been turned over to the incurably ill, suffering and death.
A few years ago, in a video, she testified this experience. "I am in constant contact with death, and this has changed my life in a profound way.
The fact of being Christian, a member of Opus Dei, has helped me to cope with this impact. All this makes me appreciate the life more deeply, because being in contact with the death also touches the life and beauty ".
One wonders if we will end up finding a definitive solution to the AIDS pandemic. "In just fifteen years, the mortality from AIDS has declined due to the availability of increasingly effective antiviral treatments. However, the virus can not be eradicated from the body.
Accordingly, the infection can only be controlled, not cured." The problem is that "prevention campaigns are no longer satisfactory because they focus exclusively on the use of condoms. It also falls into the grave error to exclude institutions supporting other effective preventive measures, such as a sexual education respectful with the integrity of the human person, and the fidelity within marriage.
The dimensions of the AIDS epidemic are so dramatic that in preventing it, no cooperation can be neglected." Margaret Ogola said that "when we all try hard, human genius can defeat any viruses".
