The Municipality of Pilar de la Horadada received the welcome news last week of the Supreme Court ruling that finally settles in their favour the boundary, first established in 1756, with the bordering town of San Pedro del Pinatar.
On 17 December the high court dismissed the claims made by San Pedro over an area covering almost half a million square metres. They said that no change is to be made to the border that divides the regions of Valencia and Murcia, a dispute which began nine years ago when the Pinatar mayor was accused of trespassing after he ordered that two of the stones marking the border should be moved.
The first attempt to resolve the dispute favoured Horadada when the Department of the Environment confirmed that the border would remain in accordance with the line drawn in 1756.
The Pinatar Ayuntamiento then appealed, although that was also rejected in 2011.
Jose Fidel Ros, the current mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, has said that he is delighted with the Supreme Court decision, particularly as all court costs will now have to be met by the San Pedro del Pinatar town hall. He said that he has always felt that the historical boundary, that runs through the centre of El Mojon, should be maintained.
