NEW PEDESTRIAN ACCESS TO CASTILLO DE SANTA BARBARA
Alicante City Council will invest 120,000 euros in the construction of a new pedestrian crossing on la avenida de Jovellanos connecting the tunnel lift of the Castillo de Santa Barbara with Postiguet Beach.
The action is part of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUs) which was passed by the passed late last year. Work will begin on 9 March and is expected to be completed within a month.
Mayor Miguel Valor said that the project will improve the safety of tourists and route them from the beach to the castle lift that is used by more than 300,000 people every year.
The crossing will also reduce the speed of vehicles on this very busy seafront road. One of the objectives of the project is “traffic calming” in the area, adding to that already done in many other parts of the city.
The EU municipal group considered the project as “positive”, but considered that it “falls short” of what is required.
They are asking for the elimination of private traffic passing through la avenidas de Jovellanos, Juan Bautista Lafora, Conde de Vallellano and Loring saying that the area should be completely pedestrianised with access restricted to public transport, security and emergency vehicles only.
